There's Something in the Attic!

The attic rooms are the least finished rooms in my Georgian dollshouse. The two smaller rooms made suitable bedrooms, and I had to decide who would sleep in them. Attic rooms, or garrets, were not always set aside for servant accommodation as is often thought. The children of a family might well have had rooms in the attic, and in some houses bachelor guests would have been given rooms on the attic floor too, so I decided that the two small rooms would be set aside for bachelors. This meant I could use furniture that was a little more interesting than that which would have been found in rooms for servants. The room pictured above is the Yellow Bedroom. it is actually a different shade from that used in the hall, but probably looks similar in the photos. The bed is a McQueenie miniature kit, and the stripy fabric was something I picked up at a dolls house fair last year (unsurprisingly, as it requires sewing, it hasn't been used yet!) and thought would work well in this room, but the bed will need a mattress first! there's a serpentine chest in the corner of the room, made from a white wood kit.The other furniture is really just hand me downs from other rooms where it's no longer needed, but fits in quite well here.

The Green Bedroom looks rather spartan at the moment, the bottom pic is older than the one above, so you can see I've used some of the things in other parts of the house, the tall chest is currently on the landing. There's not an awful lot else to tell you about this room as you can see!

This is the last room in the Georgian house that I can show you. Yes, it's empty, I have no idea what to do with it and would like to ask you all what you think would be good in this room? I had thought of making a music room. The trouble is that is has an odd shape, the ceiling slopes in, as it forms the apex of the pediment at the front, and the arch way in the middle means that much of what is behind it can not be seen, or accessed easily. Mind you it is still a fair sized room even so. The rug was purchased by mail order, and is much brighter than I imagined, which is the trouble with mail order shopping! Not sure if the rug will stay for good. Please let me know your suggestions for this room!

  1. Oh Andy,

Great post, I love the idea of Bachelor rooms, I didn't know the children's rooms were often in the attic. The rooms are lovely and the colours are just perfect.

I'm excited about the last room as I have an idea.....what about an Artists studio??? I often think of Miss Woodrough's studio in the end of "The French Lieutenants Woman" it was beautiful. Studio's are often in attics. You could have a very tidy Artist that doesn't spill paint on your lovely rug. I have seen some delightful Antique easel's in my searches.

It will be exciting to watch the rooms develop.

P.S My picture went a long time ago and now is more obvious that the blog mark is there, I will be ready for my real blog shortly do I didn't bother trying to fix it.

  2. ¡Hola Andy!

  3. Hi Andy, nice post.
Perhaps a library, where you can pull back on a winter day to read or play a game of chess or drink wine in company of a good friend.
Everything in the house looks so nice, Alexandra.

  4. Ciao Andy. I just found your blog through a series of improbable steps, and I'm happy because it just so happens that I have to begin construction of a Georgian house ... I write from Italy and here it is night and I sleep a lot, so I have to postpone the exploration of your fabulous blog, but I'm sure I will find many interesting things, judging by the last post :-)

  5. Andy, I visited the Daily Mansion in Montana that is Georgian as well. On the last floor they had servants' rooms and sewing room. As for the rug, you can dye it in not strong tea, but I wouldn't, I like this rug. Good luck with picking a theme for your last room.

  6. Hi Andy,
The attic looks lovely. I think all the suggestions are good ones. I'm not sure if it would be appropriate in a Georgian house, but could you have a card room or a smoking room? Something to compliment the bachelor's room.
    Hugs,
    Giac

  7. Hi Fi, yes I think children were kept out of sight as much as possible in large coutry houses, but it wasn't always the case. A studio is a nice idea, I will have a think about that!

Still waiting for this blog of yours Fi!!

  8. Hola Pedrete!

  9. Hello Alexandra, an area for relaxing would be good, can just see people playing chess in that space. There is already a library in the basement, but thats no reason not to have another!!

  11. Hello Natalia,

Thanks for your message, yes, servants were often housed on the attic floor too, but I wanted something different. pleased you like the rug, Pedrete mentioned staining it with tea too, I will need to decide whether to do it or not, because once done I don't think I can change things back again!

    regards

  12. Hi Giac, a gentleman's area would work well in that space too, yes, somewhere for card playing and so forth seems appropriate, thanks for the suggestion.

  13. I like the idea of the bachelor domain in the attic space. The rooms look to be of a decent size. It would certainly different from the usual servants accomodation and Giac's idea of the "gentleman's area" could work very well up there. It's an interestingly shaped room.

  14. Andy, The bachelor domain does sound good, I like the idea of a Chess set and the like, could be quite interesting.
I'm still gunning for the Artist studio though, I saw a lovely little Easle in our miniature shop yesterday...... ; )

My blog is very close Andy, I have been fighting with it's direction like Si and John but I have accepted the way it's taken me, so soon Andy, soon, and believe me you will be the first to know!

  16. Thank Irene, I must say I am swinging towards a little gentleman's area, it would make sense when the bedrooms are for bachelors. thanks for your advice

  19. Hi Andy! LOVE the idea of Bachelors Quarters! You should call it 'the Snuggery.'

The rug might be able to be over-dyed to tone it down a little.

    Your attic looks beautiful, Andy!

  20. Hi John, yes think it definately has to be a bachelor room (sorry Fi!)will see what I can find to fill it, and get some more furniture for the bedrooms too. Still thinking about whether to over dye the rug, others have suggested using tea, but which; Fortnum's Earl Grey Classic, or Lapsang?!!

He,he.....I'm having an Artists studio in my attic so I can by my own little easel.

  22. Well Fi, you would have a much better idea of what was needed in an artist's studio than I would! I'd forget to give them brushes or something!!
